Jamie and his colleagues fed a high-fat diet to several rats in the lab. The lower the level of FGF2 protein, the more probable it is to concentrate in the lower abdomen. Even this protein is so toxic to some cells that it can cause tumours to form right away.

For this investigation, Banard used a unique method. Visceral adipose tissue is taken from women who have had their uterus removed, and FGF2 protein is detected in very high concentrations.

The majority of the cells were discovered to be malignant after being transplanted into rats. "There is a tendency for subsequent tumours to occur in non-tumorgenic cells (cells that are presumably less prone to become tumours) in both humans and rats if the FGF2 protein is high," Bernard added. Estrogen derived from fat is also linked to an increased risk of cancer.
